CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The video progress bar appeared at the bottom of the window, and the Windows Media Player splash screen appeared, replacing the blackness of the credits scroll.

Winter slapped his knees. “Welp, that was The Birds. It was also our last Hitchcock movie. Or at least it was the last one that counts. He did a few more afterward, and they were probably decent, but no one seems to care about them. What did you think?”

Finch yawned as he reached for the last chocolate chip cookie in a family-size sleeve. “It was a movie from the sixties about rabid birds. It was really corny, but I liked it.”

“That’s because you’re a smart man. Think about it…” Winter tapped the side of his head, glaring at Finch through narrowed eyes. “Birds see everything. They can go everywhere. And they’re smart. We should all be afraid of them.”

Finch laughed. “Yeah, and they’re not real, right? They’re just CIA spy cameras with wings.”

“Come on, that’s just ridiculous, Finch. You read too many conspiracy theories!” Winter looked around, then pulled the unzipped halves of his jacket together. “Now bats, on the other hand… I think there’s something weird going on with those strange little creatures. Something sinister. Do you feel it too?”

Finch wheeled himself closer to the mouse and keyboard, closing the media player window. “I feel like we need to find a new batch of movies. Maybe something newer. How about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies?”

Winter cringed, pulling Finch’s hand away from the controls. “Only the first one is any good, boy. The sequels and remakes are all complete dreck.”

“Yeah, but they all have people getting chopped into pieces. And pretty girls who don’t like to wear bras. That’s all I really care about.”

“Hm.” Winter grabbed the cookie sleeve, looking sadly into its empty depths. “You make a good point, there. Maybe those films should undergo a critical reassessment. They could be worth something, after all.”

Finch slowly moved the mouse cursor to the movie folder to search for the first in the series. A camera feed suddenly slid over from the side screens and enlarged itself, filling their view. The image showed a woman walking on the other side of a wide street. She was hiking up a hill against a backdrop of leafless trees. The view of her kept getting cut off by cars flying by.

The computer automatically zoomed and enhanced the image, removing some of the artifacts and blurriness, interpolating the frames to make something their eyes could make out. Finch turned to another screen and keyboard and typed furiously, bringing up all the paperwork he could find that matched the woman they were looking at.

“Got her driver’s license here!” Finch announced, moving the image over so they could compare the two side by side. “Amanda Barnes. Twenty years old. Five-foot-six, a hundred and twenty-five pounds. Brown hair, blue eyes. Looks about exactly right to me.”

Winter nodded. “That’s the woman with Kunith inside her. Where’s this image from?”

Finch pulled up the metadata on the camera.
